Travis Sanheim Picks Up Assist For Canada; Flyers Duo Headed To 4-Nations Final Against Head Coach

In a pivotal 4 Nations Face-Off semifinal, Team Canada secured a 5-3 victory over Finland at TD Garden in Boston, propelling them into the championship final against Team USA.

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim played a crucial role in the win, contributing an assist that bolstered Canada's early lead. His teammate, forward Travis Konecny, also made contributions throughout the game, marking the first time the pair have been on the ice together for Canada in this tournament.

Sanheim's Impactful Performance

Early in the first period, with Canada already leading 2-0, Sanheim showcased his offensive acumen, jumping in on a rush, much like how he's been doing with the Flyers in NHL play. Sanheim was able to fire a shot away, but Finland goalie Kevin Lankinen wasn't able to keep control of the puck after blocking it.

Brayden Point capitalized on the rebound, extending Canada's lead to 3-0. Sanheim's ability to support the attack from the blue line was instrumental in creating this scoring opportunity.

Konecny's Contributions

Travis Konecny, known for his sparkplug presence and forechecking prowess, was a constant threat to the Finnish defense.

While he didn't register a point in this matchup, his aggressive play and ability to disrupt the opposition's breakout were invaluable.

Konecny's tenacity created turnovers and sustained offensive pressure, contributing to Canada's overall dominance in puck possession.

Rematch Against Team USA

The victory over Finland sets the stage for a highly anticipated rematch between Canada and the United States in the tournament final.

The two teams previously clashed in a heated preliminary round game, where Team USA emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, snapping Canada's 17-game winning streak in best-on-best international competition. The game was marked by intense physicality, including three fights within the first nine seconds, showing that the rivalry between the North American neighbors is alive and well.

Konecny and Sanheim will be going up against a familiar face in Flyers head coach John Tortorella, who is serving as an assistant coach for Team USA.

Prior to the tournament, Tortorella joked that he would be giving his USA players all the information they need on going up against Konecny, Sanheim, and goaltender Sam Ersson, who is representing Sweden.

However, he also recognized how special it is to be able to represent one's country, especially in a best-on-best tournament.

“I'm happy for all our guys who are able to represent Philly and their country,” he said. “Those situations are really cool for the players. I like to see my guys get some rest, but playing for your country, that trumps everything.”
