“RuPaul's Drag Race Live!” Celebrates 1000th Vegas Show, Creators Say It's 'More Important Now Than Ever' (Exclusive)

"Our ability to provide people with joy and laughter and diversity... it's our mission now," say Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey

RuPaul's Drag Race Live! just celebrated its 1,000th performance, and five years in, the Las Vegas revue is more important and needed now more than ever, according to its creators.

PEOPLE caught up with World of Wonder cofounders and RuPaul's Drag Race executive producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey ahead of the milestone show at The Flamingo on Saturday, March 15 to reflect on its past, present and future.

"We are super excited and grateful," Barbato said of the milestone. "I think we're grateful of all the casts that have been in it over the years. We started before COVID, so it's been quite tough to nurture a hit on the Vegas strip, but we're here!"

"If you can make it in Vegas, it's a good omen," added Bailey.

Saturday's show included performances from the current cast — Ginger Minj, Asia O'Hara, Jaida Essence Hall, Mophine Dion Love and Plane Jane — and an appearance and special message from RuPaul himself.

"This is an amazing feat and we are so proud of this show," RuPaul told the audience. "This has been a dream of all of ours for so many years. It's such a legendary stage. It is such an honor that you are all here tonight because you are our secret weapon. You keep coming back show after show, year after year, and for that, I thank you."

The fact that a show with predominantly LGBTQ+ creators, cast and crew is thriving in the middle of The Strip in the oldest, most iconic property isn't lost on Barbato and Bailey, especially in the current political climate where anti-gay and anti-trans rhetoric is being launched.

"When you come here to Vegas and you see all the different people from all over the country, different countries, many different backgrounds, many different beliefs on every side of the political spectrum — for [Drag Race Live!] to work and be here for 1,000 shows, that says something!" Bailey explained. "I think that a lot of the rhetoric is just that — rhetoric. It's baiting."

"For the first time, this show puts drag queen celebrities on residency. It really has become such a visibility for drag queens. We're on billboards, we're on ad campaigns, we're on taxis, we're at the airport. It's amazing to see these TV personalities come to life on a Las Vegas stage," said performer Derrick Barry, an original cast member who has appeared in around 900 of the 1,000 shows.

"This show is monumental because it's opened people's eyes to drag," added Asia O'Hara, who is only second to Barry in number of performances. "To be in a drag show on the Las Vegas Strip, in the entertainment capital of the world, is incredible in its own. But to last 1,000 shows is a true testament to what the world really needs right now, which is love, laughter and light."

"Drag Race Live in Vegas and also RuPaul's Drag Race on MTV are more important now than ever," Barbato echoed. "Just our presence is political, our ability to provide people with joy and laughter and diversity at a time when all those things are hard to find, it's our mission now and we're even more committed than ever."

To keep the show diverse and fresh, new talent is brought in. Morphine Love Dion and Plane Jane, who appeared on the most recently completed season of Drag Race, brought their signature high energy and humor, respectively. Jaida Essence Hall and Asian O'Hara are seasoned showgirls, and Ginger Minj delivered a Wicked number that would make two-time Drag Race guest judge Ariana Grande proud.

Season 17's top 6 - Jewels Sparkles, Lana Ja’Rae, Lexi Love, Onya Nurve, Sam Star and Suzie Toot - also joined the festivities. Some of them may be gracing the Flamingo stage soon.

As for the future of the show, Barbato and Bailey say anything is possible, including a potential second show and a Broadway expansion.

"We have so many talented queens who we can't wait to get on the stage. Maybe we need two drag race and two different casts in two different venues," Barbato teased.

Legendary Vegas female impersonator Hot Chocolate summed it up best. "I've lived and performed in Vegas for 40 years. To see the art of drag actually become so mainstream that they have 1,000 shows, that's just amazing."

RuPaul's Drag Race Live! 1000th show is available to stream on WoW Presents Plus and season 17 of RuPaul's Drag Race is currently airing on MTV.

Kevin Spacey tells Guy Pearce to 'grow up'
Kevin Spacey has told Guy Pearce to "grow up" after the actor claimed he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The 65-year-old actor has taken to social media to hit back at Guy's recent claims, insisting that the 57-year-old star is "not a victim". In a video posted on X, Kevin - who starred alongside Guy in the 1997 movie 'L.A. Confidential' - said: "Guy Pearce, I've now read the comments that you made about me and while I would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media, you obviously have your own reasons for wanting to do exactly that. "But, we worked together a long time ago, you know? If I did something then that upset you, you could've reached out to me. We could've had that conversation. But instead, you've decided to speak to the press, who are now coming after me because they would like to know what my response is to the things that you've said. "You really want to know what my response is? Grow up." Kevin - whose career previously went into freefall after he was accused of sexual misconduct by a number of men - actually recalled spending time with Guy after they filmed 'L.A. Confidential'. He continued: "Did you also, by the way, tell the press that a year after we shot 'L.A. Confidential', you flew to Georgia while I was shooting 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' just to spend time with me?" Kevin also questioned why his former co-star took so long to voice his concerns. The actor - who was acquitted by a jury of sexual assault charges in 2023 - explained: "Here you are now on a mission some 28 years later, after I've been through hell and back, to do what? "I've got nothing to hide. But Guy, you need to grow up. You are not a victim." By contrast, Guy recently claimed that he was "targeted" by his former co-star. The actor told the 'Awards Chatter' podcast: "I was sort of scared of Kevin because he’s quite an aggressive man. "He’s extremely charming and brilliant at what he does - really impressive, etc. He holds a room remarkably. But I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question."

Jack Whitehall teases 'really big night' at the BRITs
Jack Whitehall is planning "a really big night" for his BRITs return. The 36-year-old comedian is set to host the awards show for the fifth time in his career on March 1, and Jack is thrilled that he has another chance to host the annual event. Speaking to The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column, Jack explained: "The last show I did was in 2021, which had a fair few restrictions due to COVID. "So it always felt like, due to circumstances beyond my control, I’d maybe gone out with a little bit of a whimper. "I think the Brits 2025 is going to make up for that and be a really big night. "When I first started out I was just like ‘Jack, don’t mess this up. This is such a big opportunity’. You don’t want to say the wrong thing and insult someone and then get taken off air. Then I got to a point where I was like, ‘It’s probably best now to not outstay my welcome’. And now, here I am, back again." Jack previously admitted that he can't wait to return to the role of host, describing the BRITs as his "favourite night of the year". The stand-up comedy star said: "They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and that is absolutely the case with the BRIT Awards. It is my favourite night of the year." Jack hasn't been available to host the show in recent years due to his jam-packed work schedule. But he's now available and he's thrilled to be hosting the event once again. An insider previously told The Sun newspaper: "Jack is such a brilliant BRITs host and isn’t afraid to take the p*** out of some of the world’s biggest stars. "He has such a hectic diary that he’s been unable to take part for the past few years. But he was available this time and said yes immediately. It is one of his favourite gigs as he can have some real fun with the celebs."

All it takes is a fellow vigilante to get Matt Murdock back into action–unofficially, that is, and not yet in his firetruck red suit. The second episode of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again starts out very much like a legal procedural. Nothing to see here! No crazy violence or anything. Just a regular crime show, like Law & Order: MCU.
