‘Captain America: Brave New World’s Julius Onah On Why He Thanks Octavia Spencer In Movie Credits

Julius Onah is the director behind Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, and in the “Special Thanks” credits, there was a shoutout to Octavia Spencer.

Moviegoers had to watch all the credits to see the end-credit scene of the Anthony Mackie-starring film. Close to the end, Onah included the Oscar-winning actress in the credits despite Spencer not appearing in the film.

“Octavia’s the greatest,” Onah told People about including Spencer in the credits. “I’m such a fan of hers, and when the conversation was being had about this film, she put in some kind words for me with Kevin Feige and had spoken to Mackie as well.”

He continued, “She’s just a genuinely kind, incredibly talented human being, and I wanted to really acknowledge what a great supporter she’s been of me and other filmmakers in the past. There was no way I was gonna miss the opportunity to say thank you to her.”

Onah directed Spencer in 2019’s Luce, in which she co-starred alongside Naomi Watts, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Tim Roth.

The filmmaker recently told Deadline he would be working with another Luce alum. Onah said he would work with Harrison Jr. on a Basquiat project he has been developing for many years.

In terms of what is next for Onah, he told us, “There is some really cool stuff in terms of heist, a heist project that I’ve been putting together that is German-based, that’s set in the financial world, that I’m really, really excited about. There’s a horror movie that I’ve been developing for quite some time. I love horror. It’s a genre that, you know, gives me so much pleasure both from a technical standpoint, but then also just the visceral nature of it.”

Onah also mentioned he would “want to make a romantic comedy” and a musical, adding, “I grew up watching a lot of musicals, you know, going back to you know Robert Wise and movies like Sound of Music with my mom and my sisters and my brother and my whole family. So, that’s another genre I really, really would love to play and a great musical is like a great action movie, and every musical set piece is an action set piece. So, there’s a lot I would love to tackle next.”
