Vacations often make us wonder, "Could I live here forever?" While the U.S. ranks 23rd in the World Happiness Report, some cities in the country shine brighter when it comes to happiness. Whether you're feeling dissatisfied in your current location or seeking a fresh start, the happiest cities in the U.S. could offer a glimpse into a more joyful life.
WalletHub, a personal finance company, has recently published its ranking of the happiest cities in America. This ranking is based on 29 happiness metrics, ranging from depression rates to income growth, and average leisure time. Each metric was scored on a 100-point scale, where 100 represents maximum happiness.
Chip Lupo, an analyst at WalletHub, explains that an ideal city should offer conditions that nurture both mental and physical health, such as manageable work hours, short commutes, good weather, and strong community bonds.

How WalletHub Determined the Rankings
To create the rankings, WalletHub used data from its own research, government sources, and various happiness studies. The cities were evaluated using the following key metrics:
- Emotional and Physical Well-being: Measures such as life satisfaction, depression and suicide rates, physical health, and sports participation.
- Income and Employment: Metrics like income growth, job satisfaction, job security, and the share of households with annual incomes above $75,000.
- Community and Environment: This includes the quality of community relationships, divorce rates, safety, weather conditions, and parkland availability.
Key Factors for Happiness
Among the factors contributing to the happiness rankings, Fremont's high income levels, life satisfaction, and strong relationships set it apart. The city also benefits from its low divorce rate and limited reports of mental health struggles.
