Chappell Roan Was Booked for Elton John’s Oscars Party After They Became ‘Dear’ Friends, David Furnish Says: ‘He Keeps an Eye on Her’

Elton John counts himself as one of Chappell Roan’s earliest fans. He became aware of the singer before her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” was released in 2023.

“He was about as early as an early adopter can be to her talent. Subsequently, she’s become a dear friend to Elton and me,” the Rocket Man’s husband David Furnish tells me. “He keeps an eye on her and loves what she has achieved musically.”

John and Furnish attended one of Roan’s shows at London’s O2 Academy Brixton in September. “Elton hadn’t been to Brixton since 1968 or something. It was a real pilgrimage,” Furnish says. “We were both just blown away by her and her performance. This is a an artist with one album under their belt and she played every single song from the album. The audience knew every word, and she just gave them the most spectacular performance. Her band were fantastic. She knew how to put a song across to an audience in such an electric and powerful and entertaining way.”

So it should come as no surprise that the “Pink Pony Club” hitmaker will perform at this year’s Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. The 33rd annual event will take place at West Hollywood Park on March 2. Sharing co-hosting duties with John and Furnish will be Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka. The viewing party has raised nearly $115 million to support EJAF’s mission to end AIDS since beginning more than three decades ago.

“Chappell understands the work that the foundation does,” says Furnish, who serves as chair of EJAF. “She’s aligned with our values and our goals. We’re all passionately committed to ending the epidemic, and to putting our arms around everybody and making sure that no one gets left behind.”

John will spend the first part of the evening at the Oscar ceremony, because he is nominated for best original song “Never Too Late” from his Disney+ documentary of the same name. His co-writers included Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt. Furnish is hoping for a repeat of 2020 when John arrived at the party with his second Oscar after winning for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from his biopic “Rocketman.”

No decisions have been made if John will perform with Roan during the festivities. “They’re still talking about stuff, let’s put it that way,” Furnish teases. “We will run the same drill that we did when the song from ‘Rocket Man’ was nominated, whereas as soon as the award is presented, we will jump in the car and we will go straight on to our party because it’s very important for us to be there and to be in the room.”

The foundation has raised more than $600 million since its inception in 1992.

“The most pressing issue for the foundation is that we continue to fight and push very strongly to capitalize on the gains and progress that we’ve made, to make sure that we don’t lose momentum,” Furnish says. “There’s a lot of questions being asked by governments around the world, including America, about spending and spending efficiency and value for money.”

Furnish points to a bipartisan trip that he and John took with Democratic and Republican lawmakers to Johannesburg two years ago to see the work EJAF has accomplished in South Africa. “We were reviewing the progress that had been made so far and everybody from both sides of the aisle all unanimously agreed what a tremendous investment this has been. So much progress has been made,” Furnish says. “Everybody agreed these are very wise investments, philanthropically, for the American government and governments around the world to make.”

It’s a running joke (and arguably a pretty tired one, at this point) that men don’t know how to take care of themselves. Across the internet, you’ll find loads of videos of young women trying to teach their boyfriends the basics of skin care. Commonly, the men have never heard of moisturizer; some don’t even know to wash their faces. Personal care brands famously sell those 3-in-1 (or 4, or 5…) combo products that combine shampoo, conditioner and body wash — presumably because when you’re a man, you don’t have time to use three different products to serve three discrete purposes, I guess. Never mind that shampoo and conditioner aren’t even meant to go on the same parts of your hair.

Tori Spelling doesn't drink water
Tori Spelling doesn't drink water. The former 'Beverly Hills 90210' star, 51, has confessed she has an "aversion" to the drink and does everything she can to avoid it - revealing she opts for coconut water or soda instead and joking she's like a "cacti". During an appearance on her 'MisSPELLING' podcast, she explained: "I don't drink water. And when I say I don't drink water, I don't drink water. "How I'm still living, no one knows. I'm like a cacti. Just water me once in a while, and I somehow survive. But I have an aversion to it." She added: "I'm trying this new thing since I don't like water. I'm like, okay, I actually enjoy the taste of coconut water. "I can guzzle, like, a glass of wine in, like, two seconds. No problem. But I take a few sips of water and swallow gently, and all of a sudden, I'm like, 'I wanna puke.' " Tori - who is mom to five children with her ex Dean McDermott - went on to admit she did try drinking water during her pregnancies but it was tough. She said: "[I tried] because you have to hydrate the baby growing in you. But in my mind, I was like: 'I'm drinking for them, not myself'." The TV star also confessed she struggles with an "irrational" fear of being poisoned whenever someone hands her a drink -which baffled her ex Dean - and she joked it stems from her late father Aaron Spelling's dramatic TV shows. She explained: "I’m Aaron Spelling's daughter, hello. The creator of drama-rama storytelling ... "[Dean said] 'You're the mother of my children. Why would I want to poison you?’ And I was like: ‘Listen. It's not personal. I think this about everybody.’ " However, Tori is convinced the fear does stem from her childhood when her mom Candy would attempt to get her to take medicine by hiding it in a drink. She said: "I would say: ‘What'd you put in here? Like, what are you giving me?’ And she would say the same thing: ‘What, you think I'm trying to poison you?’ ” "This goes back to childhood. This crazy, irrational fear of handed over liquids from other people. I don't drink water. I don't call it a fear of water. I just like to say I hate water. I have an allergy to water."

Justin Baldoni's attorney addresses potential settlement with Blake Lively
Justin Baldoni's attorney insisted they may not be open to a settlement with Blake Lively. The actress, 36, and 49-year-old filmmaker have been embroiled in a bitter labyrinthine legal dispute for months after she accused him of harassment while they made domestic abuse movie ‘It Ends With Us’. Appearing on Matthew Belloni's podcast 'The Town', Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman was asked "what it would require for this to go away", as he referred to the "potential for the circus and the damage to both sides". But Freedman argued: "You keep referring to it as a circus and I get it. You see a lot of cases. "You see a lot of things, but the reality is this is not a circus when you go through an experience like this. "I’ve represented a lot of people in the worst moments of their career, the worst moments of their life. Justin has been destroyed by this." Freedman suggested "the only way" to really attempt to prove his client's innocence could be in court. He continued: "In this day and age, the only way that you can truly get back is to prove your innocence and that’s what we’re actively working to [do]. "That may only be able to be done in a courtroom." Justin, 41, completed filming on 'It Ends With Us' in early 2024 and started a press tour in August, and after fans noted Blake did not participate in interviews with him or attend the film’s premiere. Blake then filed a sexual harassment complaint against Justin – alleging that he and his agents conducted a smear campaign against her. Her lawsuit against him is set to go to trial in March 2026, following her initial filing in New York Federal Court. Blake - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in the movie - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - has denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."
