Australian central bank cuts benchmark interest rate for the first time since October 2020
The Canadian Press · The Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia’s central bank on Tuesday reduced its benchmark interest rate for the first time since October 2020 as the nation’s inflation cools.

The Reserve Bank of Australia reduced the cash rate by a quarter percentage point from 4.35% to 4.1% at its first board meeting for the year.

The cut was widely anticipated after inflation rose only 0.2% in the December quarter and 2.4% for calendar 2024. Annual inflation peaked at 7.8% two years earlier.

The bank manipulates interest rates to keep inflation within a target band of between 2% and 3%.

“Inflation has fallen substantially since the peak in 2022, as higher interest rates have been working to bring aggregate demand and supply closer towards balance,” the board said in a statement.

Bank Governor Michele Bullock later advised against believing economic forecasts that several more rate cuts were expected this year. The board will next consider changing interest rates at its meeting on April 1.

“Some other central banks have cut interest rates quite sharply over the past year, but we have taken a different strategy to most,” Bullock told reporters.

“Our policy rate was not raised as much as many countries overseas. We judged that while inflation expectations remained anchored, we could take a bit longer to bring inflation back to the target band, but we could keep unemployment lower,” she added.

Unemployment in Australia remained at near-record low levels of 4% in December, up from 3.9% in November.

Bullock said U.S. plans to increase tariffs on trading partners had the potential to be bad for economic activity around the world.

“The tariff threats and what’s going on overseas is very uncertain and probably even worse, it’s unpredictable,” Bullock said.

The rate shift is a welcome development for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s center-left Labor Party government which will seek reelection at elections due by May 17.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers welcomed the independent board's decision.

“This is the rate relief Australians need and deserve,” Chalmers said in a statement. “It won't solve every problem in our economy or in household budgets but it will help."

Chalmers said his government had curbed inflation without the negative consequences experienced in other countries including of high unemployment, a shrinking economy and recession.

Twelve of the last 13 rate increases have taken place since the government was elected for its first three-year term on May 21, 2022.

The cycle began in the final days of the previous government’s tenure when the rate rose from a record low 0.1% to 0.35% on May 4, 2022.

Justin Baldoni's attorney addresses potential settlement with Blake Lively
Justin Baldoni's attorney addresses potential settlement with Blake Lively
Justin Baldoni's attorney insisted they may not be open to a settlement with Blake Lively. The actress, 36, and 49-year-old filmmaker have been embroiled in a bitter labyrinthine legal dispute for months after she accused him of harassment while they made domestic abuse movie ‘It Ends With Us’. Appearing on Matthew Belloni's podcast 'The Town', Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman was asked "what it would require for this to go away", as he referred to the "potential for the circus and the damage to both sides". But Freedman argued: "You keep referring to it as a circus and I get it. You see a lot of cases. "You see a lot of things, but the reality is this is not a circus when you go through an experience like this. "I’ve represented a lot of people in the worst moments of their career, the worst moments of their life. Justin has been destroyed by this." Freedman suggested "the only way" to really attempt to prove his client's innocence could be in court. He continued: "In this day and age, the only way that you can truly get back is to prove your innocence and that’s what we’re actively working to [do]. "That may only be able to be done in a courtroom." Justin, 41, completed filming on 'It Ends With Us' in early 2024 and started a press tour in August, and after fans noted Blake did not participate in interviews with him or attend the film’s premiere. Blake then filed a sexual harassment complaint against Justin – alleging that he and his agents conducted a smear campaign against her. Her lawsuit against him is set to go to trial in March 2026, following her initial filing in New York Federal Court. Blake - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in the movie - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - has denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."

Millie Bobby Brown plans to 'shave her hair off' again for major life event
Millie Bobby Brown wants to "shave her hair off" when she has her first baby. The 21-year-old actress - who is getting married to Jon Bon Jovi's son Jake Bongiovi - is keen to raise a family in the future, and she'd love to go back to her 'Stranger Things' look by getting rid of her locks in time for giving birth. She told the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast: "I always tell Jake, for my first baby, I want to shave my hair off. "I don’t know. It was really liberating, would suggest it for anyone. Any girl... Maybe [I would shave it] right before I’m about to give birth because I just think hair is such an ordeal anyway to deal with. "I’m gonna nurture my child. Why deal with my hair? And I think it’s such a liberating experience. "To be a woman is, and I felt like I had that experience as a girl, but I’d like to have that experience as a woman." Millie was just 12 years old when she was cast as Eleven in 'Stranger Things', but she had absolutely no qualms about shaving her head before filming the hit Netflix show. She recalled: "I honestly did not care and I’m saying that like I really did not care. I didn’t have anxiety, I wasn’t sad when they shaved it off. "I just thought, 'Cool. Now this is what I’m doing.' I think it started to hit me months and months in where you get to that age where you’re 11 now and you’re shaving it consecutively every three days because it cannot grow past a certain length because we’re filming, so continuity-wise you’re shaving it, so every time it started to grow and I’d get excited, we’d shave it again." She started to feel "insecure" once she and her friends were getting to the age where boys were getting interested in other girls. She added: "So, I think it became to the point where I was like 12, 11 or 12, where I was like, the boys started liking girls and I was kind of like maybe, 'Why are boys not liking me?' "And then I was like, 'I’m feeling insecure now,' so I would put wigs on and I did get really, really bullied. "In public, people would make comments and stuff but honestly, I still to this day loved the experience and I would do it again."
